How to Choose Your Legacy Edition Number
In short: every colour of the Hartley Legacy is limited to 125 numbered pieces, and you choose which number is engraved on your case. Most people pick a number that means something, such as a birthday, an anniversary, an age, a year or a lucky number. Once a number is taken in a colour, it is gone for good.
Every colour of the Hartley Legacy is a numbered limited edition of just 125 pieces. When you order, you choose which number you want, and that number is engraved on your watch as, for example, 007/125. Once a number is claimed, nobody else can have it in that colour. That makes choosing it part of the experience.
What is a numbered limited edition watch?
A limited edition watch is made in a fixed quantity that will never be increased. A numbered limited edition goes a step further: each individual watch is marked with its own number within that run. Instead of owning a model, you own a specific piece.
For the Legacy, each case colour (gold, silver, black and rose gold) has its own run of 125. So there is one Legacy Gold No. 7, one Legacy Black No. 7 and so on, and never a second of either.
Why numbered editions matter
- Rarity you can prove. The number on the case shows exactly how rare the watch is.
- A personal identity. Your watch is not one of thousands. It is one specific piece with your chosen number.
- A story to pass on. When the watch is handed down, the number and the reason it was chosen go with it.
- Never remade. Like every Hartley range, once the Legacy sells out it will not be produced again. Read more about the Hartley Archive.
Popular ways to choose your number
A date
The most common choice is a number tied to a date: the day of a birthday, a wedding day or the day a child was born. Numbers 1 to 31 are always the first to go for this reason. Month numbers 1 to 12 are popular too.
An age or milestone
Buying for a 21st, 30th, 40th or 50th? The age itself makes a meaningful number and turns the watch into a permanent record of that birthday. 18, 21, 30, 40, 50 and 60 are claimed quickly. See our guide to watches as milestone gifts.
A year
With numbers running from 1 to 125, the last two digits of a year work well. 88, 96 or 24 can mark a birth year, a graduation year or the year you met someone.
A sporting number
Plenty of people choose the number they wore on their jersey, or the number of a favourite player or driver.
A lucky number
7, 8, 13, 88 and 99 are consistently popular. In many cultures 8 is associated with prosperity and good fortune, and 88 doubles it.
Matching numbers for couples or families
Couples sometimes choose the same number in two colours, for example gold and rose gold No. 14. Parents and children sometimes choose consecutive numbers.
No. 1 and No. 125
The first and last numbers in each edition are naturally collectable and tend to be claimed early.
How to pick your number
- Choose your case colour on the Legacy collection page.
- On the product page, browse the edition numbers still available in that colour.
- Pick your number, or let us choose one for you, and add it to your order.
- Your number is engraved on the side of the case, so it is always with the watch.
If the number you want is taken in one colour, it may still be free in another. Each colour has its own 125 numbers. You can also try the live configurator on our homepage, which lets you see the colour and number on a 3D Legacy before you buy.
